My husband and I toasted our 6th anniversary wedding to one of the best wines I have ever had, Santa Maria Cellars. We took a weekend getaway to celebrate our anniversary in Fredericksburg and wanted to try a Texas wine for our special occasion. Owner and winemaker Martin Santamaria was showcasing his wine at a local wine boutique on the main street and giving samples from his line. We tried some samples and immedietly became instant fans of this luxurious velvet wine that was from our homeland of Texas. We bought Sweet Red and a Cabernet Sauvignon which Martin personally autographed for us directly on the bottle.
He tributes his wine quality to the beautiful soils of the Hill Country from our very own Fredericksburg Texas land and its grapes it produces to the Argentenian flare of his roots. He was born in Mendoza, Argentina and was known for his competitive rugby for the Mendoza Province Selection, Cuyo Region. He studied in Cuyo and earned his degree in Agricultural Engineering. He then went on to pursue his passion for wine education in Italy where he acheived a Masters Degree in Viticulture and Oenology from University of Bologna in 1999.
It is in 2000 he moved to the US and served as a winemaker at Dry Comal Creek Vineyards and Winery in New Braunfels. He then launched Santa Maria Cellars and began crafting wines under his own label. Both he and his wife are passionate about wine and have both produced 7 varietals. Please visit them next time you are in Fredericksburg on Main street at Texas Wine Cellars. We are glad we did.
